I'm GILDA YAZZIE, and I want to earn your vote for Durango City Council.
My name is Gilda Yazzie, and I'm running for Durango City Council. I'm Navajo/Diné. I was raised in a large indigenous family and learned traditional family values. I'm a longtime resident of Durango. I have worked with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and other federal, state, and tribal agencies. I've also lived in Washington, D.C., where I worked on Capitol Hill on women's rights and racial equality issues. After working for many years, I went to Fort Lewis College and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. I've served as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and on Durango's Historic Preservation Board and La Plata County's Undesirable Plants and Rodent Advisory Commission. I'm an avid outdoors person. I enjoy skiing, fly fishing, and hiking.
My unique life experience and professional background will positively contribute to city leadership discussions and decision-making. I am ready to get to work addressing the issues facing Durango: affordable housing, homelessness, infrastructure, and parking, among many others. I am passionate about preserving historic downtown Durango while making safety improvements. I will ensure that our residents and business owners have a seat at the table and that their voices are included in the decisions that affect our community.
I'm also passionate about serving as a role model for our youth and ensuring we protect our natural resources for future generations.
